TIPS FOR HIRING AN ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR IN PENNSYLVANIA

Why is it so hard to find a good electrician?

Many people have a difficult time choosing an electrical contractor, especially when they may be unfamiliar with the kind of difficult and technical work that only an experienced electrician can perform. It's easy to assess a good paint job, a well constructed brick wall, or a recently refinished hardwood floor because the results are all easily visible and the criteria for evaluation is self-evident. Unlike the previous examples, electrical work when done correctly, safely, and efficiently, isn't something that the average person can spot because it's all hidden. Bad and dangerous electrical work usually goes unnoticed...until something goes terribly wrong, like a fire or a sudden power outage.

What does it mean to be "licensed" in PA?

Most contractors advertise as being "licensed" in the state of Pennsylvania. This implies some kind of government oversight or regulation of a contractor's services.

In reality, to obtain a Home Improvement Contractor License in the State of Pennsylvania, individuals or companies are only required to pay a simple application fee and provide proof of insurance. This process does not require any evaluation of the contractor's skills, knowledge or experience. In essence, anyone with a few hundred dollars can be a licensed PA contractor.

What is a Master Electrician?

Not all "licensed electricians" are Licensed Master Electricians. Becoming a Licensed Master Electrician requires years of study as an apprentice in the field. Master Electricians also must pass a comprehensive in-person supervised test administered by the local municipality of application in which they prove their knowledge of local building code and safety procedures. The process is a lengthy and exhaustive one which proves a contractor's knowledge and skill.
